What is Agrofest?...

Agrofest is Barbados’ premier National Agricultural Exhibition that was reintroduced by the Barbados Agricultural Society for the first time in over thirty years in January 2005.

Theme for Agrofest 2010- “Green Today...Sustain Tomorrow”

The exhibition is produced by the Barbados Agricultural Society and partnered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.  Pinnacle Feeds Ltd. has been with us since the reintroduction and has been our leading sponsor ever since.

Agrofest presents patrons with a unique opportunity to experience all the facets of Barbados’ agricultural sector in a relaxed and comfortable environment.  The mandate of Agrofest is to sensitize Barbadians to the value of the agricultural sector, with a view to creating a society, which supports and appreciates the concept of food security, while recognizing the fact that the sustainability of this sector depends on the establishment of linkages with the other sectors of our economy.  Agrofest seeks to strengthen links, which are vital in Barbados’ efforts at attaining food security through increased local food production, the reduction of a high food import bill and the enhancement of the quality of local food.   Agrofest also has a mandate to highlight the career opportunities available to young people in Barbados’ Agricultural Sector.

Agrofest therefore provides another opportunity for all the stakeholders –vegetable and fruit farmers, livestock farmers, fishermen, as well as persons involved in horticulture and other areas to come together in order to showcase a variety of high quality local products, promote the use of new and improved appropriate technology for crop production, demonstrate the close relationship between the agricultural sector and other sectors, and to demonstrate good  environmentally friendly practices.  It is an occasion to highlight to all, especially the youth, the many opportunities, which are available for career choices and advancement within the industry.  Agrofest also affords overseas investors and guests of the exhibition the opportunity to show off their products while seeing first hand the best of Barbados’ agriculture and related sectors.

In 2006 Agrofest attracted approximately 35,000 patrons and in 2007 approximately 38,000 & a whopping 40,000 plus in 2008 over the three day weekend.  In 2009, we successfully to expand & broaden the exhibition area and can boast of the patronage of between 45, 000 to 50,000 persons.

Objectives of Agrofest:

* To demonstrate the symbiotic relationship between agriculture and the rest of the community.
* To highlight the impact of agriculture on other economic sectors.
* To cater to the wide and divergent interests of the Barbadian public.
* To demonstrate the agricultural career opportunities for young people.
* To demonstrate the importance of agriculture in feeding and providing economic support to the family.
* To demonstrate the importance of food security
* To portray agriculture in a fun and interesting way.
