Housing

Some farmers keep cows on pasture permanently, other farms house cows during hot daytime temperatures and graze in the cooler night time hours. A growing trend is to house cows permanently in specially designed free stall barns. These barns focus on cow comfort, cleanliness and sometimes include TMR or total mixed rations. This TMR is a diet of forage mixed with concentrates and minerals that has been specifically formulated for the particular herd requirements. These barns are costly to construct but many times are justified due to the increased production of the cows.
