Definition & Explanation of key words or terms

Gilt – Young female pig that has not been bread (given birth to piglets)
Sow – Female pig that has been ‘bread’
Farrow – To give birth
Lactating Sows – Sows that have piglets that are still nursing (usually 1-6 weeks)
Weaning – To take a piglet(s) from a sow to allow it to feed on its own
Porker – Pigs eligible for marketing (between 26 kgs – 33 kgs)
Boars – Male pig.  
Terminal Boar – boars used to produce porkers.
